When you are putting together your first fashion collection, whether this is for a college project or your business, it can be hard to know exactly where to begin. While much of fashion design is about inspiration and vision, you also need to consider the logistics of your fashion design process. It helps to take the fashion design process step by step in order to develop a professional collection you will be able to sell or show.

  1. Begin with Your Concept

The overall concept is the starting point for the entire collection, as you would expect. It all begins with the concept, and a strong, inspired concept will help you create a collection that really stands out from the rest of the market. The concept stage of designing your collection could last many years, or it could be as short as a few weeks. Whatever your time scale, put as much thought and care into the concept as you can so that you have a firm base on which to start your collection design.

  1. Decide on Your Target Customer

You may want to focus more on the overall inspiration and design ideas for your clothes but it is important to also consider who will actually wear them. This is especially important if you are creating a clothing line to sell as a business. What does your ideal customer do? What is his or her style? Which designers do they admire? Do they follow fashion trends or are they guided by price? Once you have begun to think about your target customer you can build their profile, which is a good thing to have in mind when you are creating your collection and future lines for the collection.

  1. Consider Key Trends

While you must design a collection that is unique and individual, you will always need to be working within current trends in order to be able to create a collection that will actually be worn. According to UK clothing manufacturers it is a good idea to look at trends, analyse the market, see where the movement is, and decide how you are going to incorporate trends within the collection. It is not a good idea to simply use a trend because it is a trend, rather you should look at trends as a way to inform your collection and not be dictated by them. This way you design an organic collection that demonstrates your own style and vision.
